Definition
In terms of sports psychology, mental fortitude is a kind refers to the firmness and strength an athlete’s mind can hold up under pressure, challenges or misfortunes. It is about keeping one’s head, determination and spirit. Athletes will therefore be able to surmount obstacles on the field; work through stress without rash decisions or overindulgence in self-pity when things don’t go their way; recover from setbacks.

Resilience: Resiliency–testing back from failures, setbacks or losses.
Focus and Concentration: Keeping one’s concentration and mental persistence amidst competition or distractions.
Emotional Control: Controlling passions to hold nerve and achieve peak form.
Confidence: self-confidence in one’s capabilities. Even if unfavourable conditions prevail, confidence is there but its corresponding power has been taken away.
Importance in Sports
Consistent Performance: One thing that all athletes must have is mental toughness. With this strength, they can perform regularly, no matter what outside pressures or internal doubts there may be.
Overcoming Adversity: Some athletes can pass difficult tests, including injuries or a slump in performance. Those with effective mental strengths are among them.
Long-Term Success: Mental strength helps produce sports champions. It enables athletes to persistently work towards improved performance and persevere against hardships, injuries or recovering from operative procedures under anaesthesia when they are depleted of energy due to mentally exhausted limbs as well.
